It’s December.

This means that in the next coming weeks, Christmas music and movies will follow you everywhere you go. And while you think most of them are lame, some of them have turned out to be crowd favorites.

Here’s a list of favorite Christmas movies by state, according to Google Trends and Google AdWords.

Interesting Findings

A Christmas Story is the only Xmas movie choice in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, and West Virginia throughout this 3-year period. Surprisingly, in Colorado, it’s Die Hard. In Hawaii, Elf is considered as the local favorite. The 2015 romantic drama film Carol is the best-loved Christmas movie in South Carolina, Utah, and Wisconsin.

In 2017, A Christmas Story and Carol are the two movies that were favored the most in 19 states. However, in 2018 and 2019, while Carol was still loved, A Christmas Story was replaced by Die Hard

2019 marks the appearance of Little Women in the list of favorite Christmas movies – the film was the choice of 9 states.

  • Home Alone 1990, with 285 million dollars in domestic revenue, is the highest revenue Christmas movie of all time.
  • In the second and third place are Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch and How the Grinch Stole Christmas with 270 million and 260 million in box office revenue consecutively.

Is Die Hard A Christmas Movie?

  • More than half of adult Americans don’t consider Die Hard as a Christmas movie.


Using Google Trends and Google AdWords, we were able to compare the total search volume of terms like “where to watch Carol”, “Carol Netflix” and other similar terms during the Christmas holiday period in each state. We also considered the suggestions by Rotten Tomatoes of what makes the best Christmas movies of all time. From there, we were able to create this list of favorite Christmas movies by state.
